Pete Strong to Speak at the FPPTA Fall Trustee School Conference

Pete Strong will present the session “Establishing a Funding Policy” at the 2021 Florida Public Pension Trustees Association (FPPTA) Fall Trustee School Conference. The conference is being held October 3-6, 2021 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. 

Overview: A Funding Policy is a written document that sets the policies for determining how much the Plan Sponsor(s) should contribute to a pension plan and when. This session presents the primary elements of a Funding Policy, why it is important for a pension plan to have one, and the steps involved to create one.

GRS Consultants to Speak at the FPPTA Fall Trustee School

Brad Armstrong, Nicolas Lahaye, and Jeff Tebeau will present the session “Employer Contribution Stabilization Techniques to Consider Now!” at the 2021 Florida Public Pension Trustees Association (FPPTA) Fall Trustees School.  The conference is being held from October 3-6, 2021 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Overview: Many pension plans were 100% funded in the late 1990s.  Are we back there yet?  What can we learn from the past and present to apply to lessening the volatility of future employer contributions?  During this session, GRS consultants will explore the opportunities public employee retirements systems may have to stabilize future employer contributions as they reach 100% funding and experience investment gains.

Paul Wood to Present at the Fall NCPERS Confrence

Paul Wood will serve as a co-presenter at the 2021 Fall NCPERS Conference on the topic Pandemic and Retirement Plans. Paul will discuss the how actuarial mortality experience impacted retirement plans, the effect of unexpected strong investment returns, how to strengthen assumptions and methods, and considerations for ad hoc cost-of-living adjustments.

The Fall NCPERS Conference will be held September 26-28, 2021 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Joe Newton to Speak at the NCPERS Virtual Conference

Joe Newton will present the topic “Ensuring Sustainable Public Pension Plans – A Qualitative Approach” at the 2021 NCPERS virtual conference. The session is based on a unique checklist of qualitative factors and a star-rating method developed under Joe’s leadership. The process is designed to help retirement systems evaluate plan health more comprehensively by assessing factors such as policies, risks, and contribution history, versus merely relying on single metrics such as the funded ratio.
